Being eco-friendly is worthy of celebration, so why not celebrate as an office-wide team? Here’s a list of the most popular eco events you can incorporate into your workplace — whether it’s through CSR initiatives, intra-office campaigns or micro-team challenges.

ECO EVENT 1: WORLD WILDLIFE DAY (MARCH 3RD)

World Wildlife Day is held to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity. It strives to bring us closer to our goal, as a species, to co-exist with other species in a non-harmful manner. You can celebrate this with your team by organizing a trip to a nature reserve, having a wildlife-themed office party (interspersed with education) or simply sending out a mindful email to your team.

ECO EVENT 2: EARTH DAY (THIRD WEEK OF APRIL)

Earth Day aims to promote appreciation, love, and respect for our planet. This makes it the perfect day to cut down on wasteful consumption in the office. Reduce unnecessary energy usage, limit the amount of paper offered and encourage everyone to power off idle electronics. You can even use this as a starting point to slowly integrate these changes across the office, creating a more sustainable initiative with a consistent impact!

ECO EVENT 3: WORLD BICYCLE DAY (JUNE 3RD)

Carbon emissions from automobiles are a huge cause of the accumulating greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a huge global priority, which makes World Bicycle Day such a gem. Reach out to teammates who live near you and suggest cycling to work together for the day. Alternatively, you could organize an office-wide event where your team cycles to dinner/drinks after work. Sounds inconvenient? With the rise of bike-sharing applications, this excuse is simply invalid!

ECO EVENT 4: WORLD OCEANS DAY (JUNE 8TH)

Our oceans are vast and beautiful but they’re facing an environmental threat like never before. We often take the ocean for granted, overlooking its influence on food security, global travel and even our weather. The beauty and importance of oceans make World Oceans Day a great opportunity for a joint team bonding and environmental appreciation event. Try organizing an office-wide “Family Day” event to the beach, allowing employees to bond, have fun, appreciate the oceans and learn more about its importance.

ECO EVENT 5: WORLD VEGAN MONTH (NOVEMBER)

Although meat is delicious to some, our heightened demand for it is bordering on unsustainable. Deforestation to clear land for farms, high water consumption of livestock and energy emissions arising from transporting animals are merely a few reasons why. Veganism might not be for everyone, but just a month of effort itself can make a change! Of course, taking on a lifestyle change is daunting — so make it a fun little challenge with your team. This will keep you motivated, held accountable to your goal, and have fun while you’re at it. Besides, most of us spend a large part of our day at work so who better to keep us in check than our own colleagues? At an office-wide level, you can have extra fun with this initiative by incorporating rewards, social media trends and even weekly vegan themes for the month of November.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: MAKING IT SUSTAINABLE

Eco events are important, but they’re simply once-off events. In order to truly have an impact on the environment, it’s essential to integrate these practices into your company’s practices. At Timeqube, for instance, we plant a tree with every Timeqube sold. You could mirror this or add your own spin to office sustainability. Eco team challenges, monthly themes, energy campaigns, CSR initiatives — there are so many ways to save our planet. You just have to pick one and start now!
